This is the last week I will have both my girls at home together as just my girls.  I have to practice writing these things so I do not get chocked up when I say them.  I am almost done with all my tasks for the wedding which will only leave 2 days to prepare for Christmas.  I am not worried.  I read once that the only time miracles happen are when you need them to happen.  Of course I drive Highway 17 everyday so I am in need daily.

No Miniatures Club this week.

I was aiming at Thursday next week for the CH5 Test but may need to bump it out to Friday, the day I am absent.  There is an assembly that day so classes will only be 40 minutes long.  Time will be tight so students need to be prepared to sit down and start work.

Thanksgiving Post

I have been scoring video projects today.  Admittedly I have only done 9 so far and it takes an hour to watch 9.  One third of them were about English Measurements even though the title of the project is Group Video Project METRIC measurements.  If you did inches, gallons, or pounds, you will need to redo the assignment to have a chance of getting 5's.
My daughter is having her hair and make up done as a practice for the wedding.

Remember I need your grading sheet attached with all the names of the group members.  Also attach your script/rough draft so I can give you credit for that.

Aerodrome training starts today.   Camels and Triplanes to begin and then on to more exotic planes.  I was tempted to start with the early war planes since the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of WWI was this summer.

My daughter has convinced me to take a yoga class with her.  However, given our practicing last night with me, I may try this at home for awhile.  You see there is this pose or position called child's(?) pose that is considered a resting pose.  I physically cannot get into that pose due to my injured right knee.  It was quite funny to have the cat walking under us as we were trying all this out.
The house in Santa Rosa appears to be fine though the fellow who watches the place said it was amazing how fast you can move when you are asleep.  A 6.0 earthquake really packs a wallop.

Summer 3 Things I have learned this summer

This is actually the first day back for 6th and 7th grade students but since I don't have any, I can say this is still summer (even though I am wearing a tie).  Well here is my list of things that stand out about the summer though there was some other things I learned as well.

Things I have learned this summer:
How to put on ear rings and panty hose. (My wife broke her arm)
That blow dry bars are worth it with a broken arm.
That boys can fall better than girls.  May be I should say old boys and old girls
Dr Banuelos is a kind and gentle man.

That brain scans on children learning cursive handwriting accesses areas of the brain similar to ones that adults use for higher reasoning  while doing the same activity on a computer accesses none of those areas.
and that “Like everything in our culture, we declare its value by what we teach or what we do not teach our children.”

What the amygdala does and why it explains every day as a middle school teacher.

That no matter the nationality (from the notes of a keen observer) parents give in to tantrums.
Common Core wants children to do critical thinking before their brains can physically perform the task (see amygdala above and add frontal cortex).

That saying no to the marshmallow is a better predictor of academic success than IQ.
That the digital divide is narrowing in California.

That Historical Miniatures Game Club Models made this year can be entered into the Santa Clara County Fair next year in either “Creative Arts and Crafts” or “Woodworking”
Just because you think you are going to win Settlers of Catan doesn’t mean your future son in law won’t snatch victory at the last moment.

That if you find you are working really hard on a class, it pays to go to the instructor/counselor to find out if the class has more work than you would normally see in a 1 unit class and that, oh by the way, they have changed it and made it easier.

That there really isn’t any difference between frost white, organic white, misty carina, and London mist counter tops when you step back five feet to look at them.

What a heart murmur is and how common it is in folks.
That I have a heart and watched it beat using an ultrasound (ECG).
How to lose 5 pounds in a week though I gained back 2.
How good it feels to hear people say "I couldn't do that" and "Bless you" when I tell them I teach middle school.

Also 4 months from today is my daughter's wedding.  I need to start practicing my father of the bride speech so I don't cry like a baby on the day.

Summer 2, July 28

Well here I am at a Stanford Clinic waiting for my wife to get out of surgery.  She broke her arm/wrist when we went canoeing on the Russian River.  Most people's response is "I didn't think canoeing was a contact sport".  Most people forget galleys and ramming speed.    Would that that would be part of the story but it is actually more mundane.  What do 3 canoeists all do at the same time when a canoe tips to the right?  You are correct.  We all went over to the left.  My wife says the boat was full of weight and I say girls don't know how to fall.  I say girls.  I should say women who do not participate in contact sports.  I knew there was a reason for my daughters to become excellent soccer players.
I am here contemplating some new purchases.  Bells for my daughter's wedding as a gift for all the guests.  The groom says don't give them out until the end or it could get very annoying.  He is astute.  I am also considering security cameras for The Farm.  The soon to be father in law (what does that make us?) made a suggestion so we can watch as the remodel gets done.
The remodel.  We now have a sexy new septic tank.  I say sexy because it starts with an S and what else makes it oxymoronic.  The laundry room is gone and the Prickly Pear roots are being dug.  That Prickly Pear deserves capitals.
I have been able to meet with Kevin at the SMS woodshop a couple of times.  He has made great strides in making tanks and planes.
While writing this, my wife came out of surgery and everything went well.

Summer 1 June 27

Tomorrow is the 100th Anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.  The event that is considered to be the spark that started WWI.  I read something recently that the Archduke's presence in Sarajevo on that particular day was quite provocative as it was a day closely associated with Serbian independence.
In remembrance of WWI, I  have been working on tanks from that war for the Miniatures Club's game, Wooden Armor.  The Mark IV tank is ready to glue up.  The Renault tank needs some re gluing as my prototype came apart.  At least it had the decency to do it in the lay out phase rather than when I had it in the band saw.  The A7V is giving some problems and though it is from just a hunk of 4x4, is the furthest from finished.  I think some time with a belt sander will speed this up.  Pictures are waiting for a battery charger for my camera as I have put the original charger in an extremely safe place.
I am taking a class on technology for teaching.  It is an awfully large amount of work for one unit.  I am pleased that I seem to have incorporated many of the techniques mentioned in the book.  This blog is one of them.
I will try to get to the school woodshop the week after the 4th.  If you have an interest, send me an email so I can put you on my last minute notification list.

Last summer I spoke with people about swimming and folks always were impressed with the early part of the equation.  In my head I always thought "Yeah but wait until January 16th when it is cold and driving rain."  So with the record heat this year my prophesy seems to have been way off.

I had a great vacation.  The balloon explosion on Friday night went really well (defined as no one was hurt).  I got better in time for Christmas.  I got to do my traditional shopping with my daughters right before Christmas.  This year the location was a different mall and lunch because Rubios Fish Tacos are no longer in the malls.  We saw The Hobbit and Saving Mr. Banks (tissue alert).  I almost finished building a 12 foot wide gate.  We had a fun New Year's playing croquet though Stanford lost.  We held an engagement party for our youngest catered by the Crepe Man who also sells crepes at the Los Gatos Sunday morning Farmer's Market.  It was great with a wide selection.  I recommend him.
