1 Turn in Penny Lab WS
2 Test CH5

Tonight is the Combustion Comparison Demonstration at 5:30.  Dress warmly?  It was 60 degrees at my house last night but it is colder here down the hill.  That gives us an inversion layer and we are now on, I believe, our 8th consecutive spare the air day.

Here is a short video of the hydrogen plus oxygen balloon.
It was great to see all of the Sunnyvale SUNN Swim Team out for the demonstration.  Thanks again to Mr. Lestiko and Mr. Realini for their expertise and support.

The drill went well yesterday.  We are the safest place on campus and only someone with lots of time (which Sunnyvale Public Safety assures us won't happen) could get to us.  We can evacuate the building in less than a minute and a half at a walk which was good to know.  Now we just need the key to the janitor's closet and some velcro.

Agenda Thursday Oct 12 I Love Backfires

Backfires are fires that firefighters set to consume an area that a wild fire is presumed to be heading towards.  The backfire denies fuel to the wild fire creating a fire break.  They require skill in setting so they, themselves, do not turn into a wildfire.  The firefighters at Bennett Mountain did a good job with their backfire last night and my Santa Rosa home is safe at this time.

Here is a puzzle.  If I bought an iPod and it is now non updateable (obsolete) and they didn't tell me that it would be non updatetable when I bought it, should I get my money back?  How is it that I can still use an record player but not a more current working device?
Here is a not dissimilar puzzle.  Student testing is done by computer so that the students are given harder questions as they get more correct.  As a result, test scores are flattening.  "Experts" are saying that in order for students to improve on the tests, they will need to be taught in a different manner, that we may need to redo they way we teach teachers to teach, and that teachers with 20 years experience may not be able to teach students in the ways they need to be taught to do better on the tests.  [an aside is that I noticed there was no mention of removing the high stakes testing].  So when I got my credential, I wasn't told I would be nonupdateable.

Three assignments for parents
1 Keep them healthy.  If they miss school they will miss out and fall behind.  Make up work is not the same.  No really, it isn't
2 Keep them here.  No trips during school.  See number 1 for reasons.
3 Give them food and a place to work at home.  The brain runs on burning the food we eat.  They are growing and need a lot of good nutritious food (not junk food).  A consistent place to work makes the brain engage more readily.  I could tell you stories.

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

Agenda September 5 Tuesday

2 Activity: Metric Measuring Length

With one hurricane gone and one on the way it is a great time to be a meteorologist (it might not be a good time to be along the coast of the Southeastern U.S.).  I was working with my brother in law (the meteorologist) this weekend to set up a weather station in Santa Rosa.  If we ever get the station and the computer to talk to each other and patch up their differences, I will post info about this station.  Maybe even a web cam.  If I can get the Santa Rosa Station going, I have a perfect location for a SMS station.

I listen to NPR on occasion and heard a story on their show called This American Life about something called the Dunning Krueger Effect.  It was fascinating as it points out the obvious.
Scroll down to Act 2.

An after the fact note.  I got a text message from PG and E that the power was back on here at school after 5:30.
I was told once that school without the internet is like school in 1979.  School without power is like school in 1879.  Fortunately, this class had lessons that were not technology dependent.  I think we forget that we live in a world that isn't totally harmless.  As the Editors of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy wrote.  We are "Mostly Harmless".
I am concerned that the district, in a cost saving move, took out all of our land lines and attached all our phones to the internet.  You know, that thing that requires electricity.  When I asked the district person about this when it happened, he assured me that if it does, we can send notes to the office and that it wouldn't be out for that long anyway.  Thank goodness we didn't have any classroom emergencies.

We attended a funeral for the parent of my wife's colleague on Saturday (my wife's birthday).  It was a very nice service for a person I wished I had known.
We went to dinner with our children to a restaurant in Cow Hollow in SF.  The restaurant was really nice in a fun way but the food was disappointing.  It is called Bistro Aix.  The backroom had an Olive tree in an atrium setting and all the tables had been cut from the same large Cedar tree.
Then we went home and my wife went to bed with a fever.  Not the best birthday.  We were supposed to go to a murder mystery dinner theater on Sunday evening but she was too sick.  It is Monday and she still has a fever.
We did some calculations and we have had over 72" of rain since October (the beginning of the rainy season).  Additionally, we have averaged over and inch of rain per day since the first of the year at almost four feet.
Lastly, we are watching the Orville Dam closely.  We go by that location regularly on the way to Lake Almoner.
